As Iqbal's notes in the shape of Stray Reflections and his letters reveal, his mind after his return from Europe in 1908, was constantly seized of the problems of power and religion and their inter- relationship. It appears that this posture was motivated by the general pall of gloom which hung over the world of Islam. This view is strengthened by Allama's own words that the knowledge of the fundamentals of Islam is an essential prerequisite for a critical study of his poetry. He has also remarked that a study of the contemporary political and social conditions is must for the understanding of a philosophical system. The result of his constant reflections and contemplation during the years 1908-1915 appeared in the presentation of the doctrine of khudi.
